Simply put, Skype is what Microsoft™ Netmeeting™ always wished it could be. It is easy to install, fairly easy to setup, and simple to use.
Calls are made from your computer using they Skype software (a softphone of sorts), and a microphone and speakers, a USB headset, or even a dedicated phone that is capable of sending and receiving calls with both the Skype network and the plain old telephone system. Calls within Skype (PC-to-PC) are free worldwide, and are capable of much higher fidelity audio than the plain old telephone system.
Skype, however, has taken several technological leaps and bridged their PC-to-PC system to the plain old telephone system in a VOIP-type configuration.
